Biodiversity in Ohio
Ohio lies at the intersection of several influences. First there are two major drainages in Ohio, which encompass portions of the Ohio River watershed and the Lake Erie (Laurentian Great Lakes) watershed. Second, several physiographic provinces meet in Ohio, including portions of the Appalachian Plateau (glaciated and unglaciated), the Lake Plains, the Till Plains, and the Bluegrass section of the Interior Plateau. Third, as indicated, part of Ohio (about two-thirds) is glaciated and the rest is unglaciated. This diversity of geologic and environmental influences, over time, has provided many choices for biological organisms to colonize Ohio. This section, as it develops, will explore the diversity of life in Ohio from bacteria and viruses to higher plants and animals. Enjoy!
