The Ohio
Biological Survey was founded in 1912 as an inter-institutional
consortium of 13 Ohio colleges and universities. Today, the Ohio
Biological Survey is a non-profit, charitable [501(c)(3)] corporation
that has 126 institutional, agency, and corporate members. Among
them are Ohio colleges and universities, arboreta, museums, nature
centers, metropolitan park districts, state and federal agencies, zoos,
and environmental consulting firms. By cooperating with the
professional staffs of the membership, the Ohio Biological Survey
gathers and disseminates objective scientific and technical information
concerning the flora and fauna with which we share the Ohio, regional,
national, and international environment.
The Survey is adminstered
through a Board of Trustees elected by the institutional
representatives. Members of the Survey (institutions, corporations, and
individual members) pay annual dues for the privilege of membership.
Each institution and corporation selects a representative to the
Survey’s Advisory Council, which makes recommendations to the Board of
Trustees and votes on Board members and constitutional changes.
Individual members are represented on the Council by members-at-large
who are elected at the rate of one representative for every 50
individual members.
The institutional members
and their representatives are listed below. The + symbol indicates an
Affiliate Member of the Survey through the Midwest Biodiversity
Institute.
